Founded in 1776 by the Spanish, the city is named in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi . It is located in California, at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula , between the Pacific Ocean to the West and San Francisco Bay to the East, hence its nickname the city by the bay . The birthplace of jeans, with the founding of Levi Strauss & Co in 1853, SF is also the birthplace of the Beat Generation in the 1950s. Its most famous monument is the Golden Gate Bridge, a 2,737 m suspension bridge, recognizable by its "international orange" color obtained by mixing 100 parts yellow, 69 parts magenta and 6 parts black. To the south of the city lies Silicon Valley , the world's leading high-tech hub that is home to companies such as Google and Facebook . On the sports front, the 49ers  in American football , the  Giants in baseball and the Warriors  in basketball are the city's flagship teams.
